NOVEL STUDY Section A - Background Information 1) In 1907, a popular writer named Daphne Du Maurier was born. She wrote her first novel, Loving Spirit, in 1931. Other novels that Du Maurier wrote were Rule Britannia, My Cousin Rachel, The King’s General. The Scapegoat, Jamaican Inn and many more. Margaret Forester held high praises for Du Maurier. Forester had said, quot;No other popular writer {Du Maurier} has so triumphantly defied classification†¦ She satisfied all t questionable criteria of popular fiction, and yet satisfied too, the exact requirements of quot;real literaturequot;, something very few novelist do.quot; Daphne Du Maurier died in 1985, at the age of 82. The setting of Rebecca was extremely important. The location of the mansion being very close to the beach, was very important in Rebecca’s death. The ocean at the beach was where Maxim had killed Rebecca and sank her boat. If the beach wasn’t so close then the murder would have been different. Also, Manderely is where Rebecca and Maxim live together before she died. If Maxim and the new Mrs. De Winter hadn’t lived in Manderely, then the new Mrs. De Winter wouldn’t have lived in Manderely and Mrs. De Winder would not have felt like Rebecca was watching them. In addition, the isolation of Manderely was very important because it allowed no one to ever know what was going on in Manderely. No one knew that Maxim killed Rebecca because Manderely was nowhere near town. Important Events in the Plot ~ Maxim, a very rich man, meets the future Mrs. de Winter in a hotel in Monte Carlo. ~ Maxim marries Mrs. de Winter and they leave Monte Carlo. ~ The new Mrs. Winter goes to Maderely, Maxim’s well known mansion, for the first time. ~ All the staff and townspeople compare the new Mrs. de Winter to Rebecca, Maxims first wife. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is better known for his Categorical Imperative Theory in which he bases the standard of rationality on fundamental moral principle. Mill’s on the other hand focuses on the Greatest Happiness Principle or the principle of utility. With regards to similarities between them Kant and Mills seem to have universal morality rules where Kant (duties) address one’s own will to be a universal law of nature and Mills (subordinate principles) acknowledging the same actions for all humans and creatures with emotion. Abortion, the termination of pregnancy before the fetus is capable of independent life, has been practiced since ancient times. With records dating to 1550 BC, its no question that abortion techniques have been used throughout the ages as an effective form of birth control. Pregnancies were terminated through a number of methods, including the use of herbs, sharpened instruments, the application of abdominal pressure, and other techniques. In the 19th century, the English Parliament and the American state legislatures prohibited induced abortion to rotect women from surgical procedures that were deemed unsafe. However, in 1973, abortion was legalized as a result of the U. S. Supreme Court rule in Roe v. Wade. This ruling made it possible for women to safely have an abortion, no matter the reason behind it. I wholeheartedly believe that the banning of abortions should not be considered because of the possibility that the womans physical health is at risk, the case of rape or incest, or the child would be born with a severe disability. Oftentimes, the child is not wanted, and would be a potential victim of neglect or abuse. On the other hand, an abortion would only add to the emotional weight placed on the raped woman. Because of this, the mother must make her decision very carefully. If medical tests have proven that the child will be born with severe handicaps that would greatly reduce the quality of life or endanger the fetus, the opportunity to terminate should be available. Allowing abortion because of fetal disability may actually benefit the child in the long run, by saving it from a life full of unnecessary complications. This, however, is a very controversial reason and is not generally accepted by many people due to moral reasons. It is clear that the U. S. government absolutely should not allow the banning of all abortions, regardless of the reason behind it. A choice must be available to prevent the birth of an unwanted child as well as to protect the mother from physical harm. This should essentially be the choice of the mother carrying the child, and if it is in her best interest, her decision to abort should not be influenced by anyone elses opinions or moral standards. If the woman has a high risk of physical complications hat would most likely be a result from full term pregnancy, is a victim of rape, or believes that she will be unable to care for a severely disabled child, then the option points that I have made, I urge you to think twice about banning abortion and put yourself in the mothers shoes.
